SecureMitt According to
statistics compiled by the US Department of Justice, Bureau of
Justice Statistics, numerous law enforcement officers, corrections
officers, other public safety officials and civilians are injured
and killed each year by suspects who have been restrained utilizing
handcuffs, but somehow manage to obtain a weapon and cause harm.
SecureMitt is a product conceived by former law enforcement officers
for use primarily by law enforcement officers. SecureMitt was
designed to be a compact and lightweight product to be utilized in
conjunction with proper and established handcuffing policies and
procedures which along with SecureMitt will provide an additional
layer of security for the police officer on the street. When used
properly SecureMitt will decrease threat/ increase security for the
law enforcement community and public in general.
SecureMitt is a product that can also be utilized by crime scene
personnel, corrections officers, court personnel, military personnel
and hospital personnel. SecureMitt is easy to carry, easy to use and
can be used over and over if needed. SecureMitt is rugged and
durable and is relatively inexpensive to purchase and maintain.
SecureMitt has been designed as a "one size fits all" product.
While initially designed and developed to enhance officer safety,
SecureMitt, also serves several other functions. When placed on
arrestees' hands after being properly handcuffed, SecureMitt will
provide for the preservation of physical evidence found on the
arrestees' person. Such an example would be an individual who has
been arrested, handcuffed and had SecureMitt placed over both hands.
The arrested individual would not have the ability to utilize his
hands and fingers to dispose of physical evidence or contraband such
as drugs or drug paraphernalia located on their person. If the
arrestee is suspected of being involved with the commission of a
specific crime such as a sexual assault or firearms violation
SecureMitt can be retrieved from the arrestee's hands and the
necessary forensic criminal analysis testing can be done to obtain
evidence to either prove the arrestees' involvement or to eliminate
the arrestee as a suspect in that crime.
When called to the scene of a fatal or near fatal incident, the on
scene officers can place SecureMitt over the hands of the victim to
collect and preserve trace evidence that could be found on the hands
or underneath the fingernails of the victim (s). Such examples of
this trace evidence would be hair fibers, body fluids and/or DNA of
a suspect or suspects. SecureMitt can be bagged and tagged for
analysis at a later date if needed.
If SecureMitt is utilized in an arrest situation on a suspect or
suspect's the collection of that suspect or suspect's DNA would be
automatic. That particular pair of SecureMitt placed on that
specific arrestee could be retained for DNA analysis at a later date
by forensic investigators.
SecureMitt can be utilized for officer safety by jail, corrections
and court personnel as they transport defendants within a jail
setting courtroom setting or a trip to a hospital or medical clinic.
While the product has been patented
and prototypes have been constructed, it hasn't yet entered the mass
production and distribution stage. We hope to be able to make
SecureMitt available to law enforcement agencies all over the world
in 2009. |
